Inside the brain of a mum with a newborn

Is this you?
💠“Why won't my baby stop crying?”
💠“Am I doing this right?"
💠“Will I ever feel like myself again?”
💠“Should I be enjoying this more?"
💠“Is this poo normal?”
💠“Does anyone else feel like this?”
💠“I'm so tired!"
💠“Will my body ever be the same again?”
💠“How much spit up is too much?”
If a million thoughts are running through your mind, you are NOT alone.
Motherhood brings so much love, but it can also brings waves of doubt, exhaustion, and overwhelm. If you’ve had these thoughts - or others you’re afraid to say out loud - please know that so many others have been there, too.
Your body has just done something extraordinary, and now it’s filled with hormones (hello mood swings, thirst, and sweat!) and you need to heal. Getting to know this new version of yourself takes time - just as getting to know your baby does.
It’s okay to feel a little lost in these early days. Every mum has moments where she wonders if she’s doing it “right.” And every mum eventually finds her way - one feed, one cuddle, one deep breath at a time.
Here are some gentle reminders to calm your mind:
✨ Let go of the need for a routine right away. Follow your baby’s cues - each day will be different, and that’s completely normal.
✨ Find your people. Find healthcare providers you trust, who can answer your “is this normal?” questions and make you feel calm and reassured. Tune out conflicting opinions and unsolicited advice - they only add to your stress.
✨ Be kind to yourself. You just met your baby, and you’re both learning together. It’s okay if everything doesn’t click right away. It takes time to adjust to this new role.
✨ Take it one moment at a time. Take a deep breath, hold your baby close, sneak in a nap, and give yourself grace as you take each day as it comes.
You will find your rhythm. You will feel like yourself again. And in the meantime, it’s okay to feel all the feelings!
I'm here for you,
Tam xx
